Fishing for kings can be frustrating at the best of times, particularly for larger fish which can be very temperamental and moody. Popper fishing for kingfish is an exciting way of targeting kingfish and is a great way to get them fired up when they are being lazy. The takes are usually explosive and can happen in the blink of an eye. Poppers both cast and trolled are an ideal way to find the fish, particularly when you’re not sure where they are and by trolling them around you can cover the water quickly to maximise your fishing success. The holes drilled in the heads of the jet poppers make an excellent bubble trail and add to the attraction of the blooping sound made when the large concave shape of the head pushes water. Even when the kings are moody they will usually still come up for a look and give themselves away. On a recent trip to Portland in Southwest Victoria we slow trolled the 51/4 inch Williamson jet poppers in the mackerel colour.
