Fluorocarbon Leader
Fluorocarbon Leader
When it comes to chasing reef fish or species like snapper and mulloway, that have either crushing teeth or sharp gill rakers, you'll need to carefully consider what type of leader you choose. Not only do you need to make sure the leader is not so thick that it spooks the target species but also that there is enough abrasion resistance to stay connected for the full duration of the fight. Black Magic have not only introduced a new fluorocarbon leader into their range that meets all of the necessary criteria but also at a price which is affordable.

Available in breaking strains from 4lb-12lb in small spools and 15lb-150lb in large spools Black Magic Fluorocarbon leader is perfect for all species from bream to game fish. The most noticeable difference i noticed between fluorocarbon and co-polymer leaders happened on a day when we encountered some hungry

school sharks down near Wilson's Prom. Unprepared for sharks the heaviest trace we had on board was some 80lb fluorocarbon leader, used in conjunction with circle hooks this leader gave us enough time to get all but one of these sharks to the boat. A score i did not expect considering my previous bite off rate with this species. What i have found with many species of small shark is that they seem to shy away from wire leader to the point where you struggle just to get a bite, never mind a hookup.

Similarly, while filming in Kalbarri earlier this year, we experienced some great snapper fishing with soft plastics over some very heavy reef areas, the 15lb was excellent as it allowed for the lightly weighted jig heads to sink quickly and present an appealing lure action to the fish. Even though this leader is much harder than

standard leader material it still knots fairly easily, interestingly though i have found it responds better to knotting without lubrication of saliva. Instead of wetting the knot, simply pull it down steadily and slowly until it locks down.

So if your looking for some leader to land bigger fish over tough ground or if you need to downsize your leader just to entice a bite then fluorocarbon is probably worth a try as the hook trace. If you use braided line its probably not a good idea to use fluorocarbon as the shock leader as it does not have much stretch, we find either Tough Trace or Supple Trace to still be the best for shock leader.
